The original owners James & Louisa Patton were the parents of J.E. Patton who grew up to be a significant member of the town and was involved in starting the Bank of LaFayette in 1899 and the LaFayette Cotton Mill in 1903. He was one of a small group of prominent men running and developing the town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both Patton Street and Patton Stadium were named after him.
In 1890 J.E. Patton sold the house to J.H.B. Rea. Mr. Rea had many businesses and projects over the next 40 years of his life. Besides a planing mill and a cotton gin, he ran a bus line to Chattanooga and operated Rea’s Lake. He also auctioned off lots on his property. Several years after his death, his daughter sold part of the property to the city. The LaFayette Golf Course and the Recreation Center were built on this land. Fannie Rea Ransom Moore, his daughter, lived there until the mid 1980s.
From the nineties until just recently the house was home to several restaurants, most recently CJ’s Southern Traditions and Clara’s Place. This house is currently zoned B2 which allows for a large range of possible uses. The house lot and adjoining lot have been divided into five tracts to provide more possibilities. Don’t miss out on a chance to own a part of this town’s history.
